Upon arriving on scene, officers made contact with the driver of a vehicle involved in a motor vehicle crash. The female driver appeared visibly disoriented and displayed several indicators of impairment, including slurred speech, difficulty standing without assistance, and repeated confusion about her current location and direction of travel.
When questioned, the driver was unable to articulate how the crash occurred, stating only that she was en route to her son’s home in Rumson, NJ. Officers noted the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from her person and observed an open container of alcohol inside the vehicle. When asked to perform the ABCs, the driver incorrectly recited the sequence and struggled to follow basic instructions.
The driver initially attempted to comply with Standardized Field Sobriety Exercises (SFSEs), including the one-leg stand and walk-and-turn, but was unable to maintain balance, follow the officer’s demonstration, or comprehend multiple instructions despite repeated explanations. She appeared frustrated, emotionally overwhelmed, and at times stated she was “so embarrassed.”
Due to the totality of observed indicators, officers placed the subject under arrest for suspicion of Driving While Intoxicated. A subsequent breath test revealed a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.208%. The driver was processed and released to her son.
Observed Indicators of Impairment:
• Slurred speech
• Odor of alcoholic beverage
• Watery, glassy eyes
• Difficulty understanding and following instructions
• Poor coordination during SFSEs
• Incorrect recitation of alphabet
• Admission of prior DUI history
• Open container found in vehicle
