Dr. Umar Johnson stood before a predominantly Black audience and made sweeping statements about Black men—claiming Black women out-earn and out-educate their male counterparts while characterizing Black men as dating too many women, producing babies, spreading sexually transmitted infections and failing to adequately build the Black community.
I had a serious problem with that.
Not because Black men should be above criticism.
We shouldn’t.
But there is a difference between criticizing legitimate problems and creating a caricature of an entire group of men—especially when you’re a Black man speaking about other Black men in front of an audience cheering those stereotypes.
So I went to the DATA.
The point of presenting those statistics was different: STIs and HIV are complex public-health problems affecting the Black community, and the available statistics did not justify reducing that problem to a blanket characterization of Black men as the group simply “spreading diseases.”
The same need for context applies to fatherhood.
An out-of-wedlock birth statistic is NOT automatically an absent-father statistic.
The National Survey of Family Growth data discussed in this video showed major differences in the percentages of Black men and Black women who had ever had biological children. That distinction matters when people take population-level birth statistics and attempt to apply them to Black men collectively.
Finally, I address Dr. Umar telling Black women to withhold sex until Black men “build” the community.
