These are precious moments that we shared with our son in the days after his life saving double lung transplant at Toronto General Hospital on April 8th 2018.
Cystic Fibrosis had destroyed his old lungs to the point that he relied on an oxygen tank to breathe.
Cystic Fibrosis is a disease of the Lungs and pancreas, unable to create the enzymes to break down food to gain nourishment, mucus in the body becomes thick and sticky, blocking areas in the lungs and allowing infection and bacteria to slowly destroy the lung tissue, leaving the sufferer depleted of oxygen and making it hard to gain weight to the point that supplements are required to allow them to thrive, physio therapy is required at least twice a day,, with many medications to clear airways and try to bring up the mucus that is otherwise stuck in the lungs.
pills are taken with every meal and every snack, to allow the body to gain nourishment, sometimes a G-tube or feeding tube is used to supplement the 5000 calories required daily.
complications are common with the bowel and intestines such as blockages sometimes requiring surgery, CFRD is a type id diabetes, another complication due to the blockages in the pancreas being unable to deliver the natural insulin required to control blood sugar.
unlike regular type 2 diabetes it is not controlled by diet, as the CFer still requires the 5000 calorie daily intake, instead the sugars are controlled depending upon what is eaten, using a sliding scale of insulin. so diet is not cut back, and a regular diabetic diet is not to be followed.
I have 2 sons with Cystic Fibrosis
Brandon is currently back in hospital battling what can oly be considered rejection, requiring oxygen once again, we hope that the doctors can turn this around but it is a very scary time.
Brandon we love you and i hope that you guys watching will send him words of encouragement.
