Don't Sign a Vow Renewal at a Marriage Retreat such as Weekend to Remember #WeekendToRemember
Three compelling reasons why you shouldn't sign vow renewals or reconciliation documents at marriage retreats or intensives:
1) They can be used against you in court during an at-fault divorce,
2) They can lead to weaponized forgiveness within the legal system (please discuss this with your attorney if you're headed for divorce), and
3) They can result in spiritual abuse by misapplying Christian principles of forgiveness.
She advises discussing any such signed documents with an attorney and offers practical tips for indicating duress or protest if pressured to sign at these high-emotion events. Additional resources, including her book 'The Life Saving Divorce,' are available for those seeking further support.

![John Calvin Cared About Abused Wives | The Life-Saving Divorce
The famous Reformer John Calvin (1509-1564) was angry at men who abused their wives. He thought those tyrannical husbands should divorce and let their wives go free.
Heres how John Calvin translated Malachi 2:16 in his Geneva Bible:
If thou hatest her, [a]put her away, saith the Lord God of Israel, yet he covereth [b]the injury under his garment, saith the Lord of hosts: therefore keep yourselves in your spirit, and transgress not.
His commentary on Malachi 2, gives this interpretation to Malachi 2:16 (the so-called God-Hates-Divorce verse):
Here John Calvin is talking directly to abusive husbands who try to hide their bullying behavior from God and others.
What else is this, he says, but to cover by a cloak your violence, or at least to excuse it? for ye do not openly manifest it: but God is not deceived, nor can his eye be dazzled by such a disguise: though then your iniquity is covered by a cloak, it is not yet hid from God; nay, it is thus doubled, because ye exercise your cruelty at home; for it would be better for robbers to remain in the wood and there to kill strangers, than to entice guests to their houses and to kill them there and to plunder them under the pretext of hospitality. This is the way in which you act; for ye destroy the bond of marriage, and ye afterwards deceive your miserable wives, and yet ye force them by your tyranny to continue at your houses, and thus ye torment your miserable wives, who might have enjoyed their freedom, if divorce had been granted them.
Treachery Behind Closed Doors: When A Person Ought to Feel Safe
Notice how Calvin says its one thing for a robber to kill a traveler in a forest out in the open, where that person knows there is danger. But its especially treacherous for a robber to offer hospitality and invite a guest into their home and then kill and pillage them. And yet this is what cruel men do to their wives. They pretend to honor the marriage bond, but instead they torment their wife under her own roof, secretly, hidden under a cloak, in the one place that ought to be safe. John Calvin says, God sees it, and he isnt dazzled by clever concealment. In fact, the concealment makes it twice as bad. It would be better to let the tormented wife go and enjoy her freedom.
DID YOU KNOW?
Malachi 2:16 was written about 500 BC. Between 500 BC and AD 1600, NOT ONE Bible translation interpreted that verse as God hates divorce or I have divorce? Heres the timeline of Malachi: http://www.lifesavingdivorce.com/malachi

![Divorce is Gods Protection of Women in the Old Testament. Multi-language version
6-MINUTES: Did you know that God actually commanded divorce in cases where a husband refused to care for his wife at the minimum basic level? Here are two stories from the Old Testament that show how God used divorce to protect vulnerable low-status wives from coldhearted husbands.
1. God protected wives who had been enemy POWs captured in a battle. If a man chose to make a woman his wife, he had to give her the decency and respect of allowing for her to mourn for 30 days for her family before he could go to her (euphemism for sex). And if later on, he no longer wanted her as a wife (perhaps didnt want the expense of feeding and clothing her) he could not demote her to being a slave or sell her. He had to let her go wherever she wanted. She was free to remarry someone who would meet the minimum standards.
2. Lets just go straight to Scripture: Ex 21:7-11. This passage is the bedrock of Jewish marriage and divorce law in biblical times. It still is.
7 “If a man sells his daughter as a servant, she is not to go free as male servants do. 8 If she does not please the master who has selected her for himself,[a] he must let her be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to foreigners, because he has broken faith with her. 9 If he selects her for his son, he must grant her the rights of a daughter. 10 If he marries another woman, he must not deprive the first one of her food, clothing and marital rights. 11 If he does not provide her with these three things, she is to go free, without any payment of money. (NIV)
God protected low-ranking wives. A low-ranking wife might be one who was used as a debt repayment. For example, a man who was in serious debt and couldnt repay his lender, might give his daughter to pay off the loan. This isnt a wife the lender necessarily wanted, was attracted to, or cared about, but the Law of Moses said he still had to meet minimum standards of care for her. Even if he took another wife, presumably someone he really did care about, he couldnt be miserly, negligent, or mean to Wife #1. He couldnt turn her into a slave and sell her. He was commanded to let her go, so she could marry someone else. The loan to her father was still deemed cancelled.
The ancient rabbis deduced that if a bondwoman (indentured servant) had those three rights, then the minimal rights of a free married woman are deduced. (p. 126, Women and Jewish Law, by Rachel Biale) Meaning that if you are a free married woman then those three are rights you have.
Thats the point Im making here. That God gave this protection of a low-status woman, and THAT sets the minimum standard for all wives.
Abuse is not okay in the Bible, and a man who abuses and/or neglects is commanded to let his wife go, meaning to divorce her.
