Imagine buying a knife online, putting it on your belt, and then getting charged with the crime of possessing a switchblade. I pulled a case from my district and found that one guy was convicted of a switchblade knife charge, even though he had a knife expert state that it fell into the exception for such knives. He only escaped the conviction because it was overturned on appeal. Never let the DA or the cops make you believe what looks to be true as "true." This is where a lawyer that with real legal research tools and skill can get you out of trouble. Ask your lawyer if they have Lexis or Westlaw, and not such things as Google Scholar (which is great for academic work). Your asterisk is on the line. Protect it.
