Quick travel tip that can save you cash instantly: When you’re using a card abroad and a payment screen asks, “Pay in U.S. dollars or local currency?”… always choose local currency. Seems odd, I know, but if you pick U.S. dollars, the merchant is doing the conversion for you… and they sometimes add a markup or unfavorable exchange rate, which can cost you an extra 5 to 10 percent. But if you pay in local currency, your credit card provider handles the conversion… meaning you’ll typically get a much better exchange rate.
