A few years ago, I prototyped an altitude encoder tester that I planned on producing, but never got around to it. The altitude encoder tester was based on a Parallax Propeller, and it interpreted the gray code encoder lines and displays the altitude reading in hundreds of feet. By applying a vacuum to the encoder, you can tell whether it is reporting accurately. I also tear down a Narco AR850 encoder, which is the encoder I used to verify the design of the encoder tester.
