***** IMAGINE HANDEL AT AGE 22 - full of youthful energy and dreams of success - writing the most difficult work of his life!!DIXIT DOMINUS (HWV 232) "Gloria Patri" (final movement). Composed April 1707, this is a CONTRAPUNTAL TOUR DE FORCE and STAGGERING DISPLAY of technical difficulty. This final movement ("Gloria Patri") includes astonishing acrobatic fugues, pushed forward by counter subjects of unflagging energy, replete with octave-leaping "amens." Mozart said of Handel, "He understands effect better than any of us - when he chooses, he strikes like a thunderbolt!"

$DIXIT DOMINUS - SSAA/Strings (Galuppi) Z. RANDALL STROOPE conducting ***** ONE of the TWO MOST EFFECTIVE EXTENDED WORKS ever written for TREBLE ENSEMBLES in my opinion! Clean, balanced phrasing, rich polyphony, highly decorated melismas, soaring soprano lines and full alto sonorities describe just a small fraction of his writing characteristics. Baldassare Galuppi (1706-1785), born on the island of Burano, Italy, a neighboring island to Venice. He studied with Antonio Lotti, and was music director for the gifted young women at Ospedale dei Mendicanti, one of Venices four famous schools and orphanages particularly known for their SSAA music ensembles. In 1762, Galuppi was appointed to maestro di coro at St. Marks Cathedral in Venice.
