***** ONE of the TWO MOST EFFECTIVE EXTENDED WORKS ever written for TREBLE ENSEMBLES in my opinion! Clean, balanced phrasing, rich polyphony, highly decorated melismas, soaring soprano lines and full alto sonorities describe just a small fraction of his writing characteristics. Baldassare Galuppi (1706-1785), born on the island of Burano, Italy, a neighboring island to Venice. He studied with Antonio Lotti, and was music director for the gifted young women at Ospedale dei Mendicanti, one of Venice's four famous schools and orphanages particularly known for their SSAA music ensembles. In 1762, Galuppi was appointed to maestro di coro at St. Marks Cathedral in Venice.
