Flayed To Death
If you don’t know what the word “flying” means, you will soon find out, and trust me, you will thank the Gods that you were not an accused criminal living under the rule of the Persian empire. Under the first Persian dynasty, it was not uncommon for convicts to be executed after undergoing various forms of torture. Some capital crimes involved the subject being blinded, then stripped, and ultimately flayed alive. The living victim was occasionally executed by removing the skin in strips, which extended the execution and clearly caused great suffering with each strip removed.
Ashes To Ashes
The Persians executed criminals with ashes in a variety of ways, all of which were horrifying to modern sensibilities. One way required the convict to stand in a room with several feet of ash on the floor until tiredness caused him to collapse. Over the course of several days, the victim would suck ash into his lungs, eventually suffocating. The sufferer was refused food and water and frequently perished from thirst rather than suffocation from the ashes. The second method of death with ashes is referenced in the Bible and documented by the Roman historian Valerius Maximus during Emperor Tiberius' reign.
