The word “Mazatello” sounds like the perfect word that could fit in the Queen song “Bohemian Rhapsody. Just think about it. Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango? Galileo, Galileo, Galileo Figaro, magnifico Mazzatello mazatello! See, what I mean. Anyhow. Mazzatello was a type of torture used in early modern Italy. The name is derived from Mazzatello, a legendary torturer from Italy's early Renaissance period.
The Breaking Wheel
The breaking wheel was not a pleasant way to go. Sometimes known as the Catherine wheel, it was a historical technique of execution and torture employed in Europe, mainly throughout the Middle Ages and Renaissance periods. It was a big wooden wheel with spokes. The condemned person would be chained to the wheel, and their limbs would be shattered systematically with a heavy weapon like a hammer or iron rod.
