Attack on Pearl Harbor

On Sunday, December 7, 1941, just before 8:00 a.m., the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service launched a surprise military raid on the American naval station at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii, in the United States. During World War II, the United States remained neutral, until the attack on Hawaii and other US territories prompted the United States to officially enter World War II on the side of the Allies the following day. The Empire of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor was preceded by months of talks between the United States and Japan on the future of the Pacific.

Japanese demands included ending US sanctions on Japan, ceasing to aid China in the Second Sino-Japanese War, and allowing Japan access to Dutch East Indies resources. Anticipating a negative answer, Japan sent out its naval attack units in November 1941, shortly before receiving the Hull note, which said that the United States wanted Japan to withdraw from China and French Indochina. Japan planned the strike as a preventative measure. Its goal was to keep the US Pacific Fleet from interfering with its planned military actions in Southeast Asia against UK, Dutch, and US foreign territories. Over the span of seven hours, Japan launched coordinated attacks on the United States-held Philippines, Guam, and Wake Island, as well as the British Empire in Malaya, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

Mitsubishi A6M Zero

The Mitsubishi Aircraft Company, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, previously produced the Mitsubishi A6M also known as "Zero," a long-range carrier-based fighter aircraft. It was used by the Imperial Japanese Navy from 1940 to 1945. The A6M was classified as the Mitsubishi Navy Type 0 carrier fighter and was commonly known by its pilots as the Reisen, with "0" representing the last digit of the imperial year 2600 or 1940 when it entered service with the Imperial Navy. "Zeke" was the official Allied reporting name, although "Zero" was sometimes used colloquially. When it was introduced early in World War II, the Zero was regarded as the most capable carrier-based fighter in the world, thanks to its outstanding mobility and extremely long range.

The Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service commonly utilized it as a land-based fighter. In early combat operations, the Zero earned a reputation as a dogfighter, with a kill ratio of 12 to 1, but by mid-1942, Allied pilots could engage the Zero on relatively equal terms thanks to new tactics and improved equipment. By 1943, the Zero had become less successful against modern Allied fighters. The Zero lacked hydraulic boosting for its ailerons and rudder, making it difficult to control at high speeds. The lack of self-sealing fuel tanks also rendered it more vulnerable than its competitors. By 1944, Allied fighters had approached the A6M's maneuverability and routinely outperformed its weaponry, armor, and speed, rendering the A6M almost obsolete as a fighter aircraft. However, because design delays and production issues prevented the arrival of newer Japanese aircraft models, the Zero remained in front-line service until the end of the Pacific War. During the final stages, it was also modified for use in kamikaze missions. Japan built more Zeros than any other type of combat aircraft throughout the conflict.
