This video presents the Dimitra project, an innovative agricultural enterprise based in Basilicata, Italy, demonstrating how connectivity and digital technologies can modernise traditional farming practices. Founded by a team of young professionals with expertise in engineering, agronomy and business, Dimitra combines precision-farming technologies with data-driven decision-making to create a more sustainable and profitable agricultural model.
The project uses soil-variability maps, irrigation-planning systems, sensors and digital decision-support tools to optimise water and fertiliser use, while enabling remote monitoring and real-time farm management. Reliable broadband connectivity is essential for storing and analysing data, coordinating operations across different plots and accessing online advisory services.
Dimitra demonstrates how digitalisation can reduce environmental impact while improving productivity and competitiveness in rural areas. The initiative has also contributed to local economic revitalisation, creating seasonal jobs and encouraging younger generations to view farming as an innovative and attractive career path.
The project was presented in the context of the Agricultural and Rural Inspiration Awards (ARIA), an EU CAP Network initiative recognising innovative and impactful rural development projects across Europe.
