In this video I'll show you exactly where to find the best source of diatomaceous earth (diatomite) in the US and I'll walk you through the sifting process I use.
It's really quite simple:
Go to Napa Auto Parts and buy a bag of "Floor-Dry" Part# 8822.

Sift it with a 1/12" screen and keep everything 1/12" and larger.
Good to go!
If you're in other parts of the world, I've heard of some kitty litter brands that are pure diatomite with ZERO added chemicals or fragrances. You can search through bonsai soil forums for more info.
This has quickly become my favorite ingredient for passive hydroponics and I'd encourage you to give it a try and follow along for future updates!
