I've made this fading then and now video showing how Alvaston has changed using a top-down view from 1948 lined up with a 2026 view, hope you enjoy my video and please leave a comment if you do.
These are based on vertical aerial photos taken looking straight down from a plane.
This view is centred over the former Moorhead bridge which used to carry Brackens Lane over the Derby Canal.
Brackens Lane becomes Upper Moor Road where this bridge used to be located.
Notice how Jubalton Close and Penalton Close (public open space) didn't exist in the 1948 view, today the fronts of the houses on Penalton Close look out onto where the Derby canal used to run.
In 1948 there were large areas of grass, today these are the site of Alvaston Moor Academy and Landau Forte Academy Moorhead.
Notice how that clear corner plot of land on Holtlands Drive/Brackens Lane was empty in 1948, today this is various shops, anyone know what year those were built?
The Corner property on Harrignton Street/Upper Moor Road used to have a small house on the corner in 1948 but now has a modern building surrounded by vans?
There is a canal path memorial bench located just south of Alvaston Moor Academy on the former Derby Canal tow path.
The next canal bridge up from here was Harvey Road bridge and the next canal bridge south was Boulton Lane bridge where Boulton Lane Wharf was located.
