☑ Please read the description below as I have detailed all the things of interest that you can see have changed as well as bit of history you may not know.
I have made this fading then and now video using two vertical top-down photographs of a location, one taken by the RAF in the 1940's and one from Google Maps Satellite view, I have
lined them up precisely with each other so that you can watch as it fades back and forth to reveal what has changed in the decades that have passed between
the two views. Sometimes the changes are massive, sometimes they are subtle, its well worth taking your time looking at different areas of the view as you will keep spotting things.
☑ It takes a lot of time to get the two views lined up with each other so precisely as the old 1940's RAF photographs are not taken on northerly flightpaths, so it means having to
rotate the 2026 view around until North matches up with North in the 1940's photographs. Then I have to match the scale, aspect ratio, Pixel spread, lens distortion and dimensions but I think the great effort I put into making these "vertical photo then and now" videos is well worth it, let me know in the comments if you enjoyed the effort I put in and if you would like to see more.
☑ To get the most out of these presentations you really need to view them on a big screen or least a PC/Laptop with a proper screen as viewing them on a small phone screen
you simply won’t be able to see all the details properly. If you open the video in the YouTube App on your phone and you are on your homes Wi-Fi network and have a
smart TV turned on (TV's have had this YT casting feature since 2016). Simply tap the cast icon (next to the Gear icon on the screen) and select your TV from the list,
you may have to type in a code to pair it, you now know how to enjoy my videos in 4K ! If you don’t have a Smart TV or a PC then the best thing is to at least install the YouTube app and view the videos in that in Fullscreen mode, its
worth noting that once you are playing a video you can zoom in on the video using two fingers as a way of seeing more details.
► Points of interest in this video :
This view covers an area to the west of where Chaddesden ends and Derby city begins where Darwin Place car park is today.
This "then and now" is great for showing where the former Derby canal used to run, as you can see there is nothing left of this canal in 2026.
In the 1948 view the Derby canal can be seen flowing across the view and also down.
Before Derby inner ring road was built, Pegg's bridge carried Erasmus Street over to join with Nottingham Road. The South end of Erasmus Street connected to Darwin Terrace and Derwent Row where the White Bear pub was located which was next to Whitebear lock which you would use to navigate across the river Derwent against Long Bridge (demolished).
Pegg's bridge was quite a narrow hump backed bridge and was one way but on Fridays they would reverse the traffic flow due to it being such a busy route !
It was demolished in 1970 to make way for the Derby inner ring road development.
To the right of Pegg's bridge 170m (573ft) the Derby canal went under the Midland Mainline railway track.
To the left of Pegg's bridge 150m (493ft) the Derby canal went under Derwent Street East and then through Phoenix lock and onto the River Derwent above the weir near the Silk Mill near Saint Marys bridge.
Bottom/Left of both views is Exeter House which was built in 1929, designed by Charles Aslin, Derby's first Borough Architect
The Midland Railway bridge on the right of both views, construction of this line started in 1836 and it opened 11th May 1840.
Exeter Arms pub in - Built in 1816, named after marquesses and Earls of Exteter.
The Tavern pub - Built around 1867 as The Station Hotel to serve Nottingham Road station, renamed to The Tavern in June 1997.
Peacock Inn pub - Has been an inn as far back as 1818, when its address was Navigation Row. Under the ownership of The Liversage trust since 1837, leased out to Marston's since 1934.
