Following on from my video last week of Spondon then and now I have now made this one which features the lower part of Spondon.
This view is centred over South Avenue Park, spondon, Derby, Derbyshire, UK.
Ive made this fading then and now video showing how Spondon has changed using a top-down view from 1948 lined up with a 2026 view, hope you enjoy my video and please leave a comment if you do.
These are based on vertical aerial photos taken looking straight down from a plane.
Here are a few things I noticed that change between 1948 and 2026, If you notice some, I have not mentioned then please do leave a comment.
The main changes are all of those fields in 1948 are now built on, there is not much green left between the east of Spondon and the west side of Ockbrook.
In both views at the top of Willowcroft Road on Sitwell Street is a Grade I listed Georgian mansion hall built in 1740 for a local tanner Jonathan Antill, Known as The Homestead.
It has been many things over the years; at one point it was owned by Courtaulds who sold it in 1996. Currently (Aug 2026) this property is for sale at £995,000.
The Malt Shovel was built in 1860 and may have been built on the same plot as the previous pub which was burnt down in the "great fire of Spondon" in 1340.
Spondon Village Hall in the 1948 view was demolished in 1977, the current one built on the same plot opened in 1981.
The Spondon Scouts HQ on Stoney Lane opened on 1982, previously they had been in many locations in Spondon such as Moor Street in 1966.
Spondon Liberal Club on Moor Street was built in 1892 on land owned by The Guardians of the poor of Shardlow Union.
Spondon Cemetery on Stoney Lane is clearly visible in both views, it was established in 1880 originally managed by the parish council. Expanded in 1928.
This one covers the area including St Werburgh's Primary school top left across to Dale Road top right, Down to Hullside Road bottom right and across to
Willowcroft Road bottom left.
Streets included in this view are Moor Street, Stoney Lane, Gravel Pit Lane, The Pingle, Dale Road, Oxford Road, Chapel Lane, Hall Dyke,
Sitwell Street, Willowcroft Road, South Avenue, Moult Avenue, Meadow Close, Chapel Street, Arundel Drive, Brockley, Poplar Avenue, Strathaven Close,
Brackley Drive, Wingerworth Park Road, Ludlow Close.
