Creativity is a psychological process through which original and useful ideas are generated. But what counts as original and useful changes over the course of learning within a domain. In the beginning of domain learning, acclimating learners do not yet know what others working in the domain would regard as original or useful, so they necessarily rely on self-referential creative thinking processes. As learners progress, they build their domain knowledge and their understanding of domain norms, which allows for the waxing involvement of socially referenced creative thinking processes over the course of domain learning
