What can deep-sea shrimp see? 🦐 That’s what scientists aboard the e78aacb2-c4cf-4bb9-8523-a4138946aa36-owned R/V Atlantis and HOV Alvin are out to discover!
For the last month, they’ve been looking for Alvinocarididae, a family of decapod shrimp found at hydrothermal vents. Named after the nation’s deepest-diving crewed submersible, Alvin, these shrimp undergo dramatic transformations in eye morphology, with some species sporting large fused eyes on their backs.
Led by Chief Scientist Tamara Frank of afe9d0ea-4e74-490a-874c-eca9366acfac, the scientists are testing deep sea shrimp vision and conducting bioluminescence surveys to learn more about light and sight in the deep sea.
