Happy World Jellyfish Day!
Gelatinous ocean animals play a crucial role in the marine food web, so much so that it’s sometimes referred to as the “jelly web.” By feeding on carbon-rich phytoplankton, and being eaten by larger animals like turtles, jellyfish and other soft-bodied animals help move CO2 from the atmosphere to the deep ocean, where it’s locked away for centuries.
