Last week in Cape Cod Bay, WHOI researchers filmed these North Atlantic right whale moms and their calves. Grand Teton, one of the most prolific right whale mothers, is with her 9th calf. Accordion, named for the vessel strike injury across her back, is a first-time mother this year!
As these critically-endangered whales migrate to New England waters for the spring and summer, we’re celebrating the 11 new mother-and-calf pairs spotted this season.
Though more calves are needed to replace the dwindling population, there were a few bright spots: this year’s group included four first-time mothers, and three mothers had relatively short intervals between births. There were also no known calf mortalities!
