The Head of ASPI's AI and Security Program, David Wroe, joined News24 to discuss Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles's trip to the US to meet with frontier AI bosses amid the government's push to boost Australia’s stake in the development of the technology.
David explained how hosting data centres and AI hardware locally could provide a foundation for Australia to build a bigger, more sophisticated AI industry, creating intellectual property, attracting talent and expertise, and helping the nation climb the value chain towards a sovereign AI industry.
He also discussed how developing this capability could give Australia a greater voice in global governance of the technology, as well as the need for greater attention to AI safety risks and the role Australia can play in addressing them.
