This session explored control of critical technologies as an increasingly urgent strategic imperative. It examined the different approaches countries are taking to determine what capabilities they must build and sustain domestically, what can be safely sourced from global markets, and what requires carefully managed supply chains involving only trusted international partners.
The panel considered how governments can identify sectors where greater self-sufficiency is necessary, or where dependency should be limited to trusted partners. It also discussed how to reduce supply chain vulnerabilities by removing components that create risks of coercion, sabotage or espionage.
Speakers included Ambassador Deividas Matulionis, Chief National Security Adviser to the President of the Republic of Lithuania, Dr Michito Tsuruoka, Professor at Keio University, and Pastora Valero, Senior Vice President of International Government Affairs at Cisco. The conversation was moderated by James Corera, Director of ASPI's Cyber, Technology and Security Program.
