Dassault Systemes has expanded its widely used CATIA three-dimensional engineering design software to enable high-fidelity simulations. This simulation of the French Navy aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle is based on 3D engineering data. Using virtual-reality displays and haptic devices, this capability is intended to enable engineers and customers to assess designs before they are built. The fidelity of the engineering-based simulation will also allow maintenance technicians to beginning training on an aircraft before it is built, according Dassault Systemes.
