That delicate piano in the beginning was what sparked off the idea for having this be a Winter-themed sort of song.
A nostalgic song about Winter, more specifically, me being nostalgic about an old childhood memory of one of the few times it snowed down here in cowboy land (as opposed to just ice/sleet).
Speaking of the intro piano, I decided to stick with the original piano sound that I had in the original. Only difference this time is that I used lower/softer note velocities, instead of (probably) having near max velocities. I wound up layering another piano and synth-piano with this original piano sound. I particularly liked how the synth-piano wound up sounding in this. Gives off this nice sorta "retro-sparkle" during the choruses.
I had also wanted to try using my original pick-scrape recordings, but I couldn't find them. I guess I wound up recording that sample for another idea that pre-dated this song. I think the new pick-scrape samples that I recorded managed to do the job though. Soaked those samples in loads of reverb and flanger/chorus.
The bassline is mostly the same, just some small adjustments to make it a little more fun.
On the topic of fun, I've always loved the riff in the middle of the song, during the "verse". It had always been one of my favorite little warm-up riffs that I came up with back then. Like the bass, the rhythm guitars are pretty much the same as they were in the original.
The leads are also the same for the most part, except for a brief extended bit in the 2nd half of the song (I think it was about 9 extra measures/bars). I also threw in a couple of extra notes at the end of the choruses. I wasn't actually going to change the leads there, but I wound up really liking the way this bit sounded for the strings.
As for the strings, they are here more for overall texture, rather than as a standout element.
Anyways, I hope you all enjoyed this remake of "Winter Reminisce"! We've only got two more songs to go. Up next, a song that longtime listeners should be familiar with (if not with the original, then with one of its "sequels"/variants). Next time, we take to the "Sky"! ~DAR

Much like the franchise itself, its been a while since it got some love over here on the channel! With the remake around the corner (now delayed until Spring of 2022 apparently), I figured that now would be a nice time to cover something from the series.
Ive always enjoyed the warm and happy mood that this ending theme had, so I did my best to stay true to that in this cover. Ive made a few changes here and there to sort of amplify the happy atmosphere of the song. One such change would be the swung rhythm of the drums. I think it really helped add to that feel-good mood of the track.
At first, I wasnt really going to use any synths (or change the drum beat), however, that all changed as I listened to the original. My brain started thinking of electronic elements, mainly due to the clap and that sliding bass. After that, I threw in the new drum beat and layered up some synths for the synth-bass.
Also, I think this is the first time in a long while that Ive used a tone from my Line 6 POD 2.0. I was really wanting a specific sound for my Strat, and my usual signal-chain just didnt cut it this time around. I needed something that stood somewhere between clean and overdriven. After some fiddling around, I managed to dial in a tone using one my PODs Plexi amp models.
I also really enjoyed noodling around and coming up with the leads in the second-half of the cover! It really makes me think back to the alt-rock/pop-punk sound of the early 2000s.

Finally, another Persona cover! Many thanks goes out to all of you whom voted for Persona during the last COVER BATTLEGROUNDS (placing 2nd in SlaughterSphere). Also, shoutout to LegalShade for nominating this track in particular (its certainly been in the Covers-To-Do List for quite a long while now!).
As per usual, I got stuck halfway through while working on this. I wasnt sure what to try adding at first. I had to sort of get back into the right mindset for Persona again, since its been about two years ago since I last did a Persona cover.
So, after spending some time noodling around on the guitar, I finally figured out what all I wanted to add to the song. Once I added the new leads, I still felt like something was missing. As I listened to it, more and more, I kept imagining some staccato strings going with it. I tried different sounds with it, then finally I tried seeing how a violin part would sound instead. I think the new leads and new violin part fit the energy of the song pretty well!
Also, for a while I was trying to decide whether to try mixing in the original PSX version of this track. I thought of opening the song with bits of the PSX version, but in the end I decided to keep things focused on the PSP version. Plus, I think my idea of opening with the original PSX version wouldve drawn on for a bit too long. I just really wanted to jump straight into this energetic track!
As always, I had fun jamming out with this song! However, Ive gotta say, Ive been really injury-prone these last few videos =(! First I pulled the like... arch muscle of my left foot after recording the vid for my Opposing Bloodlines cover. Then, in the D64D2 cover that I did before this cover, I had hurt my left hand/wrist. Now with this one, after I finished recording the video, I somehow hurt my right shoulder. Certainly hope that this trend doesnt keep up, since I wouldnt want it to affect my ability to put out content for you guys!

Really liked the buildup this one had.
As always, I tried to stay faithful to the original MIDI. I only slightly changed up the lead guitar that comes in at the end, and added some choirs (along with some other really small additions).
I also felt like imparting a bit of this 80s/early-90s kind of retro synth feel for the synths that play on the right side. Felt like a nice match since the string-sections were handling things on the left side of the stereo field.
Also happy to use my newfound acoustic recording technique once again! Though I added a little something extra this time. I wound up recording my Ibanez with just a tad bit of grit, and then I ran it through some reverb (and chorus) and blended it with the acoustic. I think it managed to fill out the sound there quite nicely.
I also really loved playing the riff that kicks in at 2:27. I especially loved doing that little hammer-on bit in the riff (heard at 2:29, 2:36, 2:43, etc).
I threw in the choirs towards in the end since I felt like something was missing there during the whole rising chord-progression thing going on. I also changed up the lead guitar because the original was just doing this simple 5th, and then root thing. I changed it to give the leads a little more articulation and movement.
There was also a lot of layering and volume & panning automation going on behind the scenes with this one. Both the string-sections and the synths were comprised of like 3 or 4 layers each. The guitars also had their fair share of volume and panning shenanigans. I really like how the rhythm guitar turned out at 2:10-2:27. Then of course, the final lead bit is doing this whole left to right, back to left thing with the panning.
As for the video, I had a very clear scene in my head as I wrapped up mixing work on the audio. I pictured Doomguy sitting upon a huge pile of vanquished demons. Then the camera would slowly pan up to show his face all bloodied and tired. So, once I got the master rendered, and recorded some gameplay, it was time to play pretend-hotshot filmmaker again.
Setting up this bit actually took me a little longer than I had anticipated (though still really fast, all things considered). Decided to just have Doomguy sitting on top of the little pillar/switch thing at the start of the level, and just started throwing in lots of dead baddies. I also decided to recolor Doomguy, to give him black boots and upper-armor, just like D64-guy. I figured I might as well do that for this sprite, since I was frankensteining it together and editing it anyways. Classic Doomguy, but with D64-guy boots, armor, and helmet is actually pretty badass-looking. Someone should totally make a skin for that if it doesnt already exist!
Quite proud of how this bit turned out, since its pretty much how I pictured it in my head. Sitting, catching his breath, surrounded by a scene of absolute carnage. Casting his helmet away and dripping with the blood of the monsters, as well as his own. A rather fitting scene as weve come a long way in this D64D2 Marathon. 5 more to go!

Angry again, angry again, angry OW oh, oh wait, wrong song! For the longest time, I had never realized that this track had been heavily inspired by that song.
So Dukes back (and Im back)! Shout-out to LegalShade for nominating this particular track during the previous COVER BATTLEGROUNDS. Also my thanks goes out to all of you whom voted during CB3 as well. With your votes and a bit of luck, Duke made it to 4th place during SlaughterSphere!
For a while I questioned whether I should try and go for a more synth-heavy sound on this one. Thats what I had been thinking, since thats the kind of vibe the original gave me.
Of course, after consulting the song that this was inspired by, I thought that I should pay homage to it. So I changed the rhythm parts a bit to imitate the riff from Angry Again.
I also decided to scoop the mids a bit on the guitars (havent done this in quite a while). I also wound up layering a synth on top of the bass guitar for a little added grit and texture. The bass tone had some tweaking done to it as well, however, I think it wound up being more of a subtle change overall.
For the most part, I followed the original closely, but I wasnt quite sure what to add. In the end though, I came up with a new lead part for the outro.
Also, for some reason, working on the video really wore me out. Its probably because of all this heat! Anyhow, I wound up splitting my recording session into two evenings (instead of just one).
The problem was that the second session was nearly a week later, so I wound up needing to re-learn the song while I recorded. Its a bit silly, but it took me WAY longer than I thought it would to re-learn nearly everything from 1:32 onward. It usually never takes me that long to re-learn parts and to shoot the video.
With all that said though, Im pretty happy with how this one turned out.

After the rush of last map/cover, its time to calm down a little and cruise & groove to the riff and rhythm of Map13s theme!
Also, cheers to Cammy, Mr. Freeze, and Jimmy for giving this track an official name a couple of years back (as this used to be just untitled).
I stuck closely with the original, for the most part.
I mainly changed up the drums ever so slightly, and also added a couple of harmonic bits here and there.
In my usual style, I also added some new leads for the last chorus. Nothing too fancy or flashy, as I didnt want these new leads to mess with the vibe of the original track.
I actually got this one all recorded and done pretty fast. It only took this long since I was making a special Doom cover thatll be coming out here later on July 31st! Long time fans of the channel and of TNT Evilution are sure to get a kick out of that one when it releases. But yeah, thats why this cover took a little bit to get to.
