Alright, time to get the lighters and phones out and start wavin'. Every album ought to have a (power) ballad of some sort thrown into the mix!
I absolutely loved the original and didn't want to change or stray too far from it. I only changed a few notes and added some flair for the lead guitar part, just to spice things up a little. I also threw in and blended some synth-strings as well.
My bass guitar got to sit this one out, since I decided to use a combination of three synth-basses. One of these synth-basses being the original I had used back then! I did throw a distortion effect on to it, just for a little more added grit.
The Strat got to reprise its role for the clean parts. The original's clean part was brighter-sounding, whereas for this, I wanted a more mellow tone. So I opted to record on the neck pickup, as opposed to the bridge+mid pickup position.
Speaking of the clean parts, they're very similar to the clean parts that I did for "Change Destiny". I can't remember for certain, but I'm fairly sure that back then I had wanted to capture that hopeful and wishful mood. So that had led to me wanting to revisit that guitar part and changing it up a little for this song.
Originally, this song had started out on the piano. That first iteration would later become what is now the new opener for the album, "Exodus to the Stars". So that one and this one are pretty much sister songs.
I also decided to try something a little different for the pianos. Nothing too fancy, but I took two pianos and blended them together, and then I split the left and right hand parts. Left hand parts panned over to the left, and the right over to the right. I normally don't have to manually pan the piano, but I think it worked out nicely here!
Also, once again the 7-string's tone gets to shine on the leads! I'm especially happy with how the leads in the middle part of the song turned out. Always really loved the little "call and answer" thing I did there, with one part playing on the left, followed by a part on the right, and back and forth. Its like the guitars are talking to each other! I really love how the 7-string reacts to the little pinch-harmonics that I do to accent my playing at times.
Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the song! Only three more to go until this iteration of "NEW GENESIS" is complete! ~DAR

Angry again, angry again, angry OW oh, oh wait, wrong song! For the longest time, I had never realized that this track had been heavily inspired by that song.
So Dukes back (and Im back)! Shout-out to LegalShade for nominating this particular track during the previous COVER BATTLEGROUNDS. Also my thanks goes out to all of you whom voted during CB3 as well. With your votes and a bit of luck, Duke made it to 4th place during SlaughterSphere!
For a while I questioned whether I should try and go for a more synth-heavy sound on this one. Thats what I had been thinking, since thats the kind of vibe the original gave me.
Of course, after consulting the song that this was inspired by, I thought that I should pay homage to it. So I changed the rhythm parts a bit to imitate the riff from Angry Again.
I also decided to scoop the mids a bit on the guitars (havent done this in quite a while). I also wound up layering a synth on top of the bass guitar for a little added grit and texture. The bass tone had some tweaking done to it as well, however, I think it wound up being more of a subtle change overall.
For the most part, I followed the original closely, but I wasnt quite sure what to add. In the end though, I came up with a new lead part for the outro.
Also, for some reason, working on the video really wore me out. Its probably because of all this heat! Anyhow, I wound up splitting my recording session into two evenings (instead of just one).
The problem was that the second session was nearly a week later, so I wound up needing to re-learn the song while I recorded. Its a bit silly, but it took me WAY longer than I thought it would to re-learn nearly everything from 1:32 onward. It usually never takes me that long to re-learn parts and to shoot the video.
With all that said though, Im pretty happy with how this one turned out.

After the rush of last map/cover, its time to calm down a little and cruise & groove to the riff and rhythm of Map13s theme!
Also, cheers to Cammy, Mr. Freeze, and Jimmy for giving this track an official name a couple of years back (as this used to be just untitled).
I stuck closely with the original, for the most part.
I mainly changed up the drums ever so slightly, and also added a couple of harmonic bits here and there.
In my usual style, I also added some new leads for the last chorus. Nothing too fancy or flashy, as I didnt want these new leads to mess with the vibe of the original track.
I actually got this one all recorded and done pretty fast. It only took this long since I was making a special Doom cover thatll be coming out here later on July 31st! Long time fans of the channel and of TNT Evilution are sure to get a kick out of that one when it releases. But yeah, thats why this cover took a little bit to get to.

This is certainly one energetic track! So I decided to do some things a little differently here. I sort of changed some lead parts ever so slightly, and also did my own little thing with the leads from 1:50 onwards.
I think this video also marks the first time Ive ever shown myself actually playing fast in a Doom cover (always tended to gloss over the fast bits in the videos)!
Theres also actually a bit of a story to the fist wraps. I wound up wrapping my hands/wrists because I sort of got carried away working on this one and hurt my left wrist a bit. Didnt realize how out of practice I was at playing things like the bit at 1:34. Its almost like when you havent worked out in a long time, and then you suddenly decide to do too much at once!
Though, I think it was worth the effort recording it on video for once, came out looking pretty cool I think.

Hey all, Im back and proud to present what Ive been finishing up for the past couple of weeks!
ON IMPULSE is supposed to be a bit of a return to form for me. I had wanted to go back to my old style from before the RED PLANET saga. For a while I was actually worried that my style had permanently changed because of all the DOOM that Ive covered. For better or for worse, my brain seems to now default mostly to more aggressive and darker sounding riffs.
Thankfully, I think I was able to tap back into my old style! I feel like this albums collection of songs all manage to hold a piece of previous albums. My RED PLANET sound even crept back in for the track, Fever Dream. I also have my first-ever acoustic track to close out the album with too! I think that it opens up a lot of possibilities now that I can get a nice clean recording of an acoustic performance, FINALLY!

So, a bit of a detour here since I really REALLY wanted to try covering this song (plus, the new game is set to release later in April). Also quick disclaimer that these English lyrics may not be 100% 1-to-1 accurate to the original Russian version.
Shoutout and thanks goes out to Игорюня Play for suggesting that I do something from the STALKER series. Thanks also goes out to Vilison for lending me his ears and critique as I finished up the audio!
Work on this cover goes hand-in-hand with my recent and ongoing mixing-experiments. In particular, this was great practice for vocal mixing. This is probably the first time that Ive mixed vocal tracks straight down the center in the stereo field. This was something I always had a hard time with, since I would treat vocals the way I treated my guitars: double-tracked, panned left and right (to varying degrees). While that approach didnt necessarily sound bad, it did have its shortcomings.
In short, better use of serial compression, reverb and stereo delay send/aux-channels was what I was lacking all this time! Im very happy with how things wound up turning out!
I really love this track, its rather sorrowful and melancholic, yet also beautiful-sounding. I did my best to stay faithful to the mood of the original. I did change up a few things in the process though. Mainly, I had changed up the vocal harmonies, as well as some of the lyrics.
Speaking of which, I sure had a hell of a time cobbling together the English lyrics used in this cover. While there were a few translations already out there, none really musically fit the vocal melody. So, while referencing these fan-translations and machine-translations, I had to try and make things work musically, and thus had to reinterpret some lyrics. Now, I hardly know any Russian, but I tried my damnedest not to stray too far from what I thought the original meaning of the lyrics were.
Also, I must say, theres this small, silly satisfaction with rolling my Rs and just overall singing with my best attempt at a kind of Russian / Eastern-European accent.
Lastly, messing around with the whole stylized lyric video was pretty novel and interesting for me. I quite enjoyed laying out all the lyrics, this is something Id definitely do again for any possible future vocal covers!
