Peter Helland continues to reflect on America's 250th anniversary this July 4th. Wesley and Fletcher, the leaders of the Methodist church, wrote in the pamphlet wars of 1775 and 1776 between the British and Americans against Thomas Paine. Paine showed his true colors after writing Common Sense because his next two books, Rights of Man and Age of Reason aimed at destroying Christianity. Fletcher and Wesley were obviously right when they argued that the American Patriot's politicks or principles were best reflected by Satan's speech on liberty in Milton's Paradise Lost. Jesus said: "Not my will be done but Thine be done." Satan saw that position as pure slavery as did the American Patriots. Fletcher concluded that if the Patriots won with their cornerstone doctrine being that government was the creature of the people then he concluded that all Kings and all subjection would be removed off the earth. The deeper cornerstone to the revolution was the social, political and legal destruction of the inalienable right of the eldest son to his biblical "double portion" of the inheritance. Essentially throughout all history and all peoples the eldest son was being trained and assumed into the leadership position of the family when the father died. The revolution of 1776 effectively killed that idea and thus prevented almost all families from practically continuing on after the father's death. In almost all cases there is then no real head of the family as there had been. Lincoln's war of dedicating the "nation" to the proposition that all men are created equal has won out
And the chances of the American family maintaining any strength and unity after the father's death remains very slim.
