How many times have you been excited for Milky Way Photography but found yourself staring at a full sky of clouds?? Last night?! Yeah I feel ya! Here are my two favorite websites for checking the conditions before I make that long drive for a night of Milky Way Photography. Using ClearDarkSky.com and ClearOutside.com together offers me an accurate peak into the future to know whether driving out there is worth it!
NOTE: As with ALL weather prediction tools, understand that local conditions always change on you and your perfectly clear night can turn into a thin layer of recently formed clouds that hang overhead for hours! Or the gods of cloud bullying will form clouds ONLY ON TOP of your Milky Way Core while the rest of the sky is perfectly clear! Making the predictions right but the skies decided to mess with you and ONLY you anyway! The war between photographers and clouds is an everlasting one and if you have ever hoped for good clouds for Landscape Photography or clear skies for Milky Way Photography, you understand the anguish when nature laughs at you.
