Now I am FOUR NIGHTS in on the #TheGreatMilkyWayChase challenge of doing Milky Way Photography for 23 Straight Nights and I had to mix up the foreground subject. Keep things exciting! So I did my night of Milky Way Photography out at the Little Sahara Recreation Area.
The Little Sahara Recreation Area offered sand dunes to line up under the Milky Way that could give me great variety in my images with little effort. A short drive and then all I had to do was pick my spot. I ended up choosing an area merely 100 yards in to the dunes of the White Sands area of Little Sahara. I chose the spot because of the old tree. It broke up the horizontal planes in my composition and brought interest stemming from the bottom and reaching all the way to the sky and touched the Milky Way Core!
Finding this spot fast was required as I was running late that night and needed to hurry and find something good before the moon started rising and getting in the way of my darkest sky so far! My previous three images were all in Bortle class 3 areas and this one was a Bottle class 2! So I really didn’t want a pending moon rise brightening up my sky and changing the color in the sky and starting to wash out my galactic core.
I DEFINITELY need to come back to this area with Brendon and walk MUCH DEEPER into the dunes and get more of a classic clean sandy dune foreground with the Milky Way. Good thing I am doing this 19 more times!! :D
Keep checking back on the adventure as I go for 23 straight nights of Milky Way Photography! Night 5 Brendon and I battled light pollution and then clouds forced us to completely abort the first plan and move to a never before location and hope for the best! Check in later to see how it went!
