Our biggest mistake for Night #7 was that we only made it to Fantasy Canyon after dark! Milky Way Photography at Fantasy Canyon was an awesome and interesting challenge being that we were DOWN in a canyon making it easy to block the core of the Milky Way off the horizon. But not being able to film the area in the light and explore in the light was a major loss! Sometimes life gets in the way of leaving with enough time to arrive during the daylight, but we still made the most of it and LOVED capturing the Milky Way in Fantasy Canyon!
The rocks were just so gnarly and crazy that it was actually pretty difficult to get a composition that featured anything or had any balance and purpose. You need to focus closely on a subject and move the rest of the distracting elements out of the frame. But in our time there we weren’t successful in combining an interesting subject AND the Milky Way core without any issues. Without any compromises made.
We settled on a panorama to really feature the open area there and to make sure we got a powerful Milky Way over the craggy interesting terrain. Can’t wait to go back to Fantasy Canyon with more time to really do it justice!
Keep checking back on the adventure as I go for 23 straight nights of Milky Way Photography! Night 8 we are needing civilization and the comfort of a good bed so we stay close to my parents home and feature the Milky Way over some farm land sprinklers. Stay tuned for that video coming up!
