From recording sessions between 1982 and 1984 Bruce Springsteen, his E Street Band, and manager/co-producer Jon Landau had compiled 70 songs to choose from to finalize their Born In The USA album. However, his co-producer felt they needed one more song to make the album a block-buster seller. He pressured Springsteen to write one more song that needed to be a hit single, but it had to be an upbeat tempo type "dance" record. In the end, it proved to be the spark that Springsteen needed and he came up with "Dancing In The Dark" that expressed the isolation and frustration of trying to write a hit single. It became his biggest hit, and wound up #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1984, and propelled the album to become the best selling one of his career.
