The back lanes of Old Delhi are excruciatingly narrow and choked with people, pushcarts, bicycles, motorbikes, and even the occasional car. But by far the most popular form of transportation are rickshaws, both motorized and three-wheeled cycles. I arrived in the middle of Diwali, one of the most important Hindu holidays of the year, and the best way to get to the Metro station was by cycle rickshaw. It was a long ride, and the older driver was painfully thin. I couldn't imagine that he was capable of making the journey but he surprised me. He cycled part of the way and,where we hit uphill stretches, hopped off and pushed us.
