To catch and keep certain fish, you'll need to know that it is within the right size limit. Getting caught with an illegal sized fish is never worth the penalties. After some time you'll be able to spot a 'slot' sized fish without measuring it, but sometimes a fish can be too close to risk. And if you're hungry, this diy trick can really come in handy.
As always though, remember that altering your kayak like this could void your manufacturer's warranty, so if that is a concern, you might want to just bring a taylor's tape along in your tackle box instead.
