This is an accidental find of a really good substitute for a crystal earphone. I only have 1 so far, so I have not torn it apart, but I think it's a very high impedance magnetic type driver. The sound quality is excellent. A bit lower in pitch than the piezoelectric type. Very lightweight, comfortable, and much smaller. I have not done a bunch of testing yet, just with the wiper and inductive tuning styles, but it works well with both.
I have tried it with the resistor across the leads, like with piezos, and it works fine. It also seems to work equally well with a small capacitor across the leads instead of the resistor! Odd. I have not done a lot of testing yet, and frankly I don't want to change my circuit diagrams unless far superior results warrant it. We shall see.
