Let's look at a pre-built crystal radio from online that's supposed to be ready-to-use, with a variable capacitor, inductor, diode detector, and audio transformer. It looked promising, with minimal setup, it's pretty much a dud: no stations, no static, and no response even when driven with a signal generator at audio and RF carrier frequencies. If you’re interested in crystal radios, passive receivers, vintage electronics, RF fundamentals, or avoiding bad DIY purchases, this experiment is a clear case study in learning by testing.
UPDATE: I replaced the ferrite coil with a 2 inch air core coil and could get 2 stations, badly. Still not worth it.
