After a few disturbing experiences, I have been trying some privacy experiments to see how far the internet spies on us. Thought we could do an experiment together. So in this video, we look at an easy experiment in internet privacy anyone can try to see if our devices are secretly listening. Inspired by strange coincidences in my own life, like getting targeted ads for yachts and private jets after joking about them in private conversations, we walk through how to set up your own test. The method is simple: come up with absurd, highly specific scenarios and luxury purchases you’ve never mentioned online, then talk about them near your phone or computer (or email them to a friend playing along). Over the next days or weeks, watch for targeted ads, recommendations, or content matching your “fake” interests. By having many people run this experiment, we can see just how much of our personal conversations might be monitored and monetized by apps, platforms, or data brokers. Perfect for DIYers, tech enthusiasts, and anyone curious about digital privacy, this collaborative project is a fun, eye-opening way to explore the intersection of technology, data collection, and everyday life.
