Before Europe’s colonial expansion reached West Africa, the Ashanti kingdom in Ghana was a powerful and independent empire. Its kings controlled vast trade networks, exchanging gold for firearms, expanding their territory, and even participating in the transatlantic slave trade. This wealth and influence shaped the culture of the region for centuries.
Colonial rule transformed the role of African royalty. Today, Ashanti kings no longer hold political power, yet they remain central to Ghanaian cultural identity, honored and revered as guardians of tradition. Across West Africa, many customs, ceremonies, and symbols of authority were reshaped by colonial influence. Even royal crowns — once unknown in African tradition — became emblems of power during this era, adopted in imitation of European monarchs.
In Sierra Leone, the legacy of colonial trade and exploitation is also deeply felt. Diamonds, once a source of wealth, fueled a brutal civil war that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and displaced millions. Amidst this turbulent history, the survival of cultural heritage — from rituals to symbols of royalty — reveals the resilience of African societies adapting to foreign domination while preserving their identity.
