Hilaire is one of these stockmen. Like many New Caledonians of European descent, he has adopted Australian cattle-breeding techniques to manage livestock in the wild environment of the island. But gathering cattle that roam freely across the mountains is no easy task.
With the help of skilled dogs and remarkable horsemanship, these riders track and regroup cattle scattered across immense valleys and steep hillsides. Their work demands strength, endurance, and a deep knowledge of the land.
Each year, this tradition comes alive in rodeos where stockmen compete to demonstrate their agility, courage, and mastery of the herd. More than a sport, these events celebrate a lifestyle shaped by the land and the animals.
