We tell you the story of the two mega mountain sculptures near Custer South Dakota in the Black Hills. The tributes to the North American leaders of Crazy Horse, the Lakota leader who defeated General Custer at the Battle of Little Bighorn and Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. The Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear approached Mount Rushmore associate sculpture artist Korczack Ziolkowski in the 1930s to build a tribute to the native American hero Crazy Horse. By 1948 Ziolkowski began the biggest sculpture in history (bigger than Mount Rushmore, the Statue of Liberty, and the great Pyramids in Egypt, or the Sphynx.) The private project was projected to take 100 years and has been taken up by Ruth Ziolkowski and then her daughter. In 1998 the face of Crazy Horse was completed. Mount Rushmore was funded by the U.S. Government and sculpting took 14 years from 1927 to 1941. The lead artist for Mount Rushmore was Gutzon Borgium.
