Linus attempts to climb the high point of Montana, Granite Peak, in questionable weather over three days.
Took SW Ramp route via Sky Top Creek. The mile markers on All Trails are wildly inaccurate. Sometimes a mile is 0.5 miles and sometimes the Alltrails miles are 2 miles by GPS. From mile 10 to 13, Alltrails says it is 3 miles from the south side of Lone Elk Lake to the base of Granite but the distance is really 6 miles. Wake up earlier!!!! I was turned around with thunder and hail at 11,000’ 0.6 miles from the summit at the base of Granit. Spoke to 3 other parties on the way up and none on the way down. 1 turned around when she got a glimpse of granite before the base. A group with 60 meters of rope turned around in good weather because the could not find rope anchors over a class 5+ section. The third part of two said the free soloed a class 5-6 section at the crux all weretrying the ramp. I saw no one walking out on the last day with intermittent rain and thunderstorms. I saw no bears. The goats stalk u to lick the rocks u pee on. No snow was reported on the Ramp. Don’t carry ice axe and crampons in August like I did. I started from the SW Ramp Trailhead according to the Google maps. Almost all roads in the National Forest are 4by4 and high clearance. Do not attempt rocky roads without a Polaris as they are not suitable for passenger vehicles. If you go to the SW Ramp Trailhead according to Google maps, you can save 3 miles relative to Alltrails. It is the “p” marked on the Alltrails map. If I return to the SW side, I plan to hire horses or rent a Polaris (if available). Am early start and strong back is required without that porter support to get to the base of the mountain at mile 13 where there is a lake full of water in August 9. Give yourself more time on Granite because 1000’ of elevation gain on the approach is 4000’ down and 5000’ up. No snow was reported on the ramp or higher. I could not see any either.Unfortunately, I carried ice climbing crampons, ice axe, and ice tool for nothing.
