There are many UK game shows that I enjoyed a lot growing up and reminisce over frequently, Countdown being one of them. Richard Whiteley hosted it for a number of years since it's inception before passing unexpectedly which was a massive shame. I enjoy watching videos of his great wit and on-screen relationship that he had on the show with Carol Vordeman.
One thing that has stayed true and consistent throughout the show's lifetime, however, was the main theme tune itself. I decided to pick the version that was used from 1988 to 1991 to cover as this one resonated with me the most and it was a huge jump in quality from the previous iteration. That, and the fact that I particularly enjoy this set of title sequences.
I think that this one translates rather well to a 4-channel 8-bit version, not just because of the simplicity in the melody but also the fact that the channels available are able to recreate those punchy sound effects that you get from the ones that were used - a ticking clock, a metronome almost. Thirty seconds to go to either come up with a word from a set of nine letters or solve the mathematical problem given six numbers and a randomly generated target amount! Can't beat it really.
