Colorado’s water crisis has an unexpected hero: sports betting.
As Proposition DD—the ballot measure legalizing sports betting—was being crafted by legislators in 2019, Colorado was facing drought and water shortages. The solution: use the tax revenue from sports betting to fund water projects. After tethering sports betting to a social good, the measure passed by slim margins.
