The Colorado Shakespeare Festival held an open call for four-legged thespians, hoping to find the perfect pup for an upcoming production of Shakespeare in Love.
The audition process is simple. Dog and owner enter center stage, favorite treats on hand. They meet producing artistic director Tim Orr and then answer a series of questions, including, “How would your dog react to seeing a squirrel in the bushes?” “Is your dog comfortable with strangers?” “Can they do any tricks?”
“There will be 1,000 people in the audience every night, so during the audition I’m trying to get a sense of general behavior and temperament,” Orr said.
Nearly 40 dogs were in attendance during Saturday's audition, with only two making the final cut. Orr said they will be making an offer to the lucky pups in the coming weeks.
