"Hey hey, ho ho, poverty wages have got to go."
These words, among many other rally cries, echoed through the Civic Center Cultural Complex outside the Denver Art Museum Tuesday afternoon during a rally organized by the @damworkersunited.
The union, known as DAMWU, has been in negotiations with museum staff for more than 18 months over a fair contract and improved working conditions. Tuesday's rally was an attempt to raise public awareness about the union’s unmet demands.
The union is requesting things like higher wages, strong immigration protections and stools for those who stand by the art all day.
"There are still requests that we are receiving pushback on," said Kit Bernal, member of the Denver Art Museum Workers United and senior curatorial assistant at the museum. "We have conditions that we want to improve."
The union goes back to the negotiation table on Feb. 26, where they hope they can finalize the requests to management and secure a fair contract for the union.
“This will be the groundwork for everything going forward,” Bernal said. “Our union is primarily about workers having a seat at the table in the decisions that affect us.”
