Hey guys, welcome back to the channel. Today I'm back with some contemporary florals. I think this is one of my new favourite subjects to paint. Admittedly, I'm still unsure of all the different classifications of art styles. So this is what I hope is contemporary-ish.
I love the lotus flower. One of my fond memories as a child was to go on random fishing trips with my dad. He'll bike us down to upstate new york and explore the untouched lakes and ponds by the roadside. The raw beauty of these lakes and ponds captivates me in a way that no public parks or garden can.
Most of the wild lotuses we've encountered were the American lotus, which looks a little different from the Asian ones. They are usually in pale yellow and the tips of the petals are slightly rounded, whereas the latter are usually in pink, with more pointed petals.
However, one of the ponds that we've discovered was sprinkled in pink with wild Asian lotuses sprawled across the water.
It had just finished raining as well, and there was a layer of mist surrounding the trees. Twas one of the most beautiful sight I have seen.
We sat down to fish and an elderly man in a small fishing boat came over to us and struck conversation with my dad, an avid fishing enthusiast. This pond was just at the border of his estate and the pink lotus seed came from a few imported fishes that were released into this pond.
We asked for permission to bring a few back home to plant as I was very into gardening then, but my thumbs were never green. So we brought it back in a few plastic bags with the root.
It died a few days after.
Rather anticlimactic, but anyway, I thought it was a nice story to share. I don't even know which breed of lotus I'm painting here, but I wanted to try something a little different by outlining the flowers in black.
Black is quite a strong color, a little harsh, but I also think that it adds dramatism to the overall piece. The swirly black patches in the background were supposed to mimic Chinese ink, or what I was hoping it would resemble.
I like the little gold touches towards the end and I might try something similar but perhaps refine it a little more. Anyway, this painting is listed on etsy. Hope you'll like this piece, hence without further ado, let's begin
