Compass: Landscapes of the Self
Rajiv Mohabir, Pardis Mahdavi and David Heska Wanbli Weiden in conversation with Pedro Silva

Award-winning poet and translator Rajiv Mohabir has authored critically acclaimed poetry and nonfiction. The Indo-Caribbean American writer’s fifth collection, Seabeast, is a poetic bestiary of whales, written in strangely affecting verse, challenging the anthropocentric impulse to overwrite their sublime differences. Journalist and entrepreneur Pardis Mahdavi has written seven nonfiction books, including her recent Riding, which weaves together the history of Caspian horses, her Iranian-American identity, and the healing power of human-animal connection. Celebrated crime fiction writer David Heska Wanbli Weiden is the author of the bestselling Winter Counts, named one of Time’s 100 best mystery and thriller novels of all time. His Native American vigilante protagonist, Virgil Wounded Horse, returns in his latest thriller, Wisdom Corner. In conversation with Pedro Silva, they discuss how their personal histories have shaped their craft, uncovering overlooked stories, and reframing familiar themes.
