Cinema and literature have long shared a restless creative dialogue, transforming stories, histories, and emotions across forms. Acclaimed filmmaker Fernando Colomo is a stalwart of Spanish comedy cinema, and has directed iconic adaptations of literary works, including Bajarse al moro, and Los años bárbaros, which was nominated for the Goya Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Author Shrabani Basu’s biographical historical drama, Victoria and Abdul, was made into an award winning motion picture in 2017. In conversation with film critic Angélica Tanarro, they explore the creative tensions and possibilities that emerge when literature is translated into the screen.
Shrabani Basu is a Sunday Times best-selling author and historian. Her books include the critically acclaimed The Mystery of the Parsee Lawyer, For King and Another Country, Spy Princess, and Victoria & Abdul, the latter of which has been adapted into a major Oscar-nominated motion picture, starring Dame Judi Dench. She is a frequent commentator on Indian history and Empire on radio and television.
Angélica Tanarro is a writer and journalist. She has served as culture editor at El Norte de Castilla, and as editor of its cultural supplement La Sombra del Ciprés. She currently writes for magazines such as Publishers and Turia. She is the author of three collections of poetry: Serán distancia, Memoria del límite and Lo que (no) sé de las palabras.
