If your Honda S2000 has an intermittent rattling sound coming from the catalytic converter while idling, there is a good chance that your catalytic converter is broken. As the catalytic converter ages and wears the internal honeycomb will eventually break loose and begin making a rattling sound like this…
After this begins it won’t take too long for a CEL to appear, reporting a problem with the secondary oxygen sensor. This is because the loose internal honeycomb has a funny tendency to want to decapitate your secondary oxygen sensor. My oxygen sensor hadn’t met it’s fate yet but you can see that it got smashed pretty badly.
If this happens to you, you’ll have to replace not only the catalytic converter but the secondary oxygen sensor as well. The good news is that there are several ways to fix this problem without breaking the bank.
