Steps
1. The first thing you want to do is get your car on jackstands. Some people just jack up the rear but I prefer to jack up the entire car so I can fit under it easily.
2. Once the car is on jackstands you will want to remove the rear wheels. This will give you better access to the muffler hangers.
3. With the car on jackstands and the wheels removed you’ll need to remove the rear suspension stiffener. Use a 10mm socket to remove the two bolts holding the charcoal canister to the suspension stiffener on the drivers side. Then use a 14mm socket to remove the four bolts holding the suspension stiffener to the rear subframe.
4. Now you want to remove the three nuts holding the exhaust to the catalytic converter. If you car has lots of miles or is susceptive to rust you’ll want to spray some some penetrating oil on the nuts as they commonly rust. Once the penetrating oil has done its job, use a 14mm socket to remove the three nuts. An impact gun comes in handy here.
5. Now you want to prepare the exhaust for removal. Lubricate the rubber exhaust hangers and steel posts that they ride on with some silicone grease or dishsoap. There are 5 hangers you’ll have to grease. 1 sits next to the resonator and then two sit next to each muffler. This lube will make sliding the hangers off a breeze.
6. Once everything is lubricated, remove the exhaust hanger next to the resonator. Lightly push up on the resonator to relieve pressure on the hanger and pull it free from the steel post. Once this first hanger is removed, use a jack to support the exhaust right where the main pipe separates into the left and right pipes.
7. Now you have to remove the remaining hangers. Remove the two rearmost hangers for each muffler. For the last two remaining hangers you’ll want to remove the passenger side first and then remove the driver side second. If you’re having trouble remember to lift up on the muffler to relieve pressure on the hanger so you can slide them off.
8. Once all the hangers are removed you’ll want to pull the exhaust backwards a few inches so that it separates from the catalytic converter. Then carefully lower the jack and pull it out from under the car to finish removing the exhaust.
