What do you do when a customer walks into your shop and asks for 'cack' or for 'parri' -- or indeed for a 'pee'? A (very wealthy) Arab walks into the Mini Market. His wife has armed him with a shopping list (and asked him to run an errand for her later). But communication can be a problem as pronunciation is not that particular customer's forte... (Fortunately for the shop owner, his wife is there to help him. Despite his condescending attitude towards her, it seems she is twice as clever as he is...) Level: C1 -- C2. Topic: Shopping, Pronunciation. Taken from the BBC TV Series 'The Two Ronnies'.

SOME TIPS FOR PRESENTERS
I cannot say I am an expert, but I have attended numerous talks by others and I have given quite a few myself. So I thought I would make a quick list of ‘Dos and Don’ts’ – hoping that others will add to it…
DO…
…start with something attention-catching (a joke – something weird – a story); you only have a few seconds.
…say interesting things. Content matters. (Ask yourself: would someone still find your talk interesting if they were not an EL teacher?)
…use stories and anecdotes to make your talk more interesting. Stories are our mother tongue.
…use stories to convey information; stories are far more memorable than giving studies or numerical information.
…move from the concrete to the general. It is easier for people to understand a principle if you have given them a concrete example first.
…include some practical elements. People need to be able to answer a question like ‘What did you get out of this?’ afterwards – regardless of how brilliant the talk was.
…add value to your talk through ‘social currency’. Include interesting little tit-bits of info that people can share with others (‘A glass ball will bounce higher than one made of rubber’).
…include ‘peak’ moments in your talk (a striking example; a paraprosdokian; a motivational quote etc.). This is what people will remember later (‘The Peak – End Effect’).
…segment your talk, and regularly let people know which part of the talk you are in.
…use your body, your arms and your facial expressions to liven up your talk.
…colour your voice; you may never become Cliff Parry but pitch fluctuations, stress and the strategic use of pausing help immensely.
…talk with confidence and assurance. This means two things: i) you have to know your stuff and ii) you need to have faith in what you are saying.
…use incongruity. Weird things like the completely unrelated picture of a dinosaur on the slide helps wake people up.
…use the power of association. Make that dinosaur a cute baby or a kitten. Advertisers have used kittens to advertise pizza. They know what they are doing.
…use emotions (uplifting soundtracks, moving poems, anger-provoking pictures, etc.) Emotions help print your message in people’s memory.
…interact with the audience (e.g. by eliciting information, by asking them questions, by using simple discrimination tasks, or asking them to predict something).
…engage the audience somehow (e.g. by giving them an activity to try out or something to discuss with a partner). Interactive elements boost information retention.
DON’T…
…stand behind the podium (unless you are as interesting as Luke Prodromou in which case you can do whatever you want).
…read from a text or your notes / overload your slides / read from the slides.
…choose titles like ‘The situated construction of divergent modalities in the quest for a fundamental positionality: the case of the subjunctive’.
…use long, complicated sentences. Forget you are an academic for the duration of the talk (…better still: ‘Forget you are an academic’).
…let the talk sag; make sure you maintain a brisk pace. Monitor activities and cut them short if people are losing interest.
…go over time; even the best attendees start getting restless if you do (plus it is unfair to the organisers and the next speaker).
…fade out; end with a bang (a quote – a joke, etc.) – and clearly signal to the audience where they are supposed to applaud. This helps round off the experience (see 2:00 – 2:12 here). *
[* NB: That last joke is not mine; I’ve pinched the idea from J. J. Wilson :-) ].

![Comedy for ELT - The Marrow Song
[Warning: Using such material in class can get you seriously fired!] This is about a guy who, well, had…. I mean, no, no – what I mean is that he managed to grow a rather big marrow. OK, look, I don’t know how to describe the song – I think the refrain says it all:
“(Ooooh! What a beauty!), Ive never seen one as big as that before
(Ooooh! What a beauty!), It must be two feet long or even more
Its such a lovely colour, and nice and round and fat
I never thought a marrow could grow as big as that
(Ooooh! What a beauty!), Ive never seen one as big as that before…”
Just listen to it. It’s incredible how much humour the comic genius of Kenneth Williams manages to squeeze out of a rather simple song – just by colouring his voice…

OK – give your imagination free rein: if you could ‘reinvent’ things, how would you change them? Take for instance the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) – a boring place where you have to queue for hours for some bureaucratic nonsense and where employees just give you surly looks before the inevitable “Computer says ‘No’ ” response. Wouldn’t it be great if you got a smile and an ice-cream instead?
This amazing ad can serve as yet another springboard for classroom interaction.
Task 1: Talk to the person next to you. If you could ‘reinvent’ things (change them in any way you can [or even find hard to] imagine) how would you do it? Here is a list of things you might want to change: couches / police officers / babies / blenders / flats / curtains / rain
Task 2: Now watch the clip and make a note of how the TOYOTA people have ‘reinvented’ these things.
Task 3: Over to you now. What 4 things would you like to ‘reinvent’? In what ways would you change them? Here are some things you might consider: teachers / tests / workplace / fridges / pets / beds / books / bicycles etc. Feel free to make your suggestions as weird as you wish. Enjoy!

![Psychology and ELT - The Pursuit of Meaning 2
The second experiment Ariely describes is one which feels much closer to the classroom. In this case subjects were given a page with lines full of random letters and there were asked to spot cases where letters appeared in pairs (‘ss’, ‘pp’ etc.). Once they had circled them all, they were to hand in the paper, get their money, and pick up another sheet if they wished to continue. There were 3 conditions: in the first one, the research assistant would get the sheet, look it up carefully, nod and then put it on the pile with the others; in the second, the assistant would just put it on the pile without looking at it; the third was diabolical – in it, the assistant immediately shredded the sheet without a single glance! Did this make a difference? (You bet it did! )

![Human Sexuality - What Women Want
If you want to find out what people want / prefer, don’t ask them; more often than not, they will give you the wrong answer either i) so as to look nice – PC etc., or ii) because they themselves don’t know. It is best to use indirect means. For example: what do these people buy? When it comes to W, many of them buy romantic fiction (it’s a huge industry). So what do the heroes look like in Mills & Boon romances? Here is Dr Gaddam to give us some answers.
[NB: Some decades ago (during the 70s – 80s) people thought that W liked these guys because of the way they had been brought up, the prevalence of patriarchal norms etc. So writers experimented with ‘New Age’ heroes – ones who were gentle, sensitive and clearly in touch with their emotional side. The experiment was a complete failure. It turns out that while many W would happily marry Ross Geller (of ‘Friends’ fame) people like him do not feature in their fantasies… When it comes to the M that W like to fantasise about (on average), study after study has shown that they share one key trait; they are all ‘Dominant’.]

![Comedy for ELT - Homo Devis 2 [The Race]
Scientists have recently discovered a new human (sub-)species. It’s called ‘Homo Devis’. Most of us plebs refer to them as ‘the super posh’ and ‘the filthy rich’, though people have been known to use other names as well… These people live differently, they think differently, they speak differently.
A brilliant comment on class stratification by the very talented Catherine Tate. Taken from the BBC TV Series ‘The Catherine Tate Show’. Level: C1 – C2 Topics: Rich – Poor / Class / Discrimination / Values.

![Emotion in ELT - 7 Soundtracks
Emotions are immediate, powerful and beyond our control. Because emotions deal with the important things in life (attraction, fear, anger, jealousy) our brain ‘tags’ emotional experiences (‘Remember this!’). For this reason, emotionally-laden experiences are far more memorable than ordinary ones. As teachers of course, we want our students to have memorable learning experiences. One way of doing this is to introduce music in class.
This clip contains 7 very evocative short extracts from the soundtrack of different film genres. Here are two possibilities: Students listen to the music and make very brief notes of the kind of images that come to their mind. Then they can simply share what they have imagined with the person next to them (the differences are often quite interesting). Alternatively, students could write a short paragraph describing the images that the music triggers in their mind; the teacher can collect these pieces of writing and put them up on the wall. The students could walk around and try to guess who wrote what.

![Human Nature - Cognitive Fluency
Imagine you are shown an electronic product. You are perfectly happy to pay $ 100 for it. Now imagine this product comes with an additional feature – at no extra cost. Surely that should not be a problem? Surely that should add to the value of the product? Amazingly, this is not always the case.
The answer is to be found in something called ‘Cognitive Fluency’. If it is easy for me to understand the function of the original product, my brain is happy. If the addition of the extra feature somehow confuses me, I may well decide not to buy it at all! Amazing!

![Men and Women - Market Value and Adaptation
Do all guys see Megan Fox as a 9.7 out of 10? Do I (a poor 4.6 on a good day) stand a chance with her? And what happens if for whatever reason my Market Value drops even further? Do I maintain my previous ‘high’ standards thus potentially condemning myself to a life of celibacy or do I adapt to my changed circumstances? And if I do adapt, do I see people differently? Do I no longer see beautiful people as beautiful just because they are now out of my league?
In this amazing little clip, Professor Dan Ariely gives us some answers to these questions. A ‘must watch’ clip for anyone wishing to gain some deeper insights into the way people pair up.
